Residual Resonances
A cylindrical metal vessel, marked by oxidation, operates as a resonant chamber that exhales the sonic de-composition of a field recording capturing a single shot from a .22-caliber automatic pistol*. In this work, the emblematic crack of the gunshot—instantaneous, forceful and culturally overdetermined—is displaced from its original context and rearticulated as atmospheric matter. Its spectral vibrating residues traverse and strain against the metallic cavity, reframing the gesture of the shot as a prolonged, affective resonance rather than a discrete acoustic event.
*The shot was fired and recorded by the artist at a shooting range in Hialeah, Miami-Dade, FL (USA).
This piece extends the research initiated in Study on the sound of a 22, developed during an artist residency in Miami, and forms part of DESHABIT(u)AR—a project of sonic re-territorialization carried out within the collective Geopoéticas Subalternas.
